SITE DESCRIPTION: Exposures of Upper Carboniferous Langsettian (Coal Measures) Greenmoor Rock are revealed along a 50m abandoned quarry face. The site illustrates a range of sedimentary rocks with massive sandstones and silty mudstones forming a 12m high section. The southern end of the exposure illustrates part of a large channel with erosion surfaces. Cross stratification structures can be seen at the base of the massive sandstones.
EDUCATIONAL VALUE: This is a suitable site for students to study sedimentary environments and sandstone structures. AESTHETIC CHARACTERISTICS: The site lies in a wooded vale, typical of Coal Measures landscapes in West Yorkshire. ACCESS AND SAFETY: There is parking adjacent to the site on Thunderbridge
Lane. There is safe access, although the site is overgrown in places,
requiring clearance of vegetation. It is the car park for the Woodman
Inn in Thunderbridge and is floodlit at night. |
