DESIGNATION SHEET UPDATED August 2009
SITE DESCRIPTION:
Extensive beds of Upper Carboniferous Langsettian (Coal Measures) clays,
shales and
sandstones are exposed in a 75m high quarry face at Calder Brick works,
south of the
river Calder. The exposure lies between the overlying Stanningley Rock
and the Elland
Flags. A thin coal and a marine band lie within the exposure. The shale
has been
worked to the south-east end of the site and is benched. Vegetation
is encroaching,
especially on the benches, since quarrying finished a few years ago.
The north east
section of the LGS has been used for storing shale and some of the
site has been
flattened.
HISTORICAL
ASSOCIATIONS:
Numerous brickworks and pipeworks in the Brighouse and Elland area
have exploited
these deposits for several centuries.
EDUCATIONAL VALUE:
Not suitable for educational use at the moment due to ongoing quarrying.
A proposed
development at this site may enable an exposure to be retained
for geological study.
AESTHETIC CHARACTERISTICS:
There are extensive views over the Calder Valley.
ACCESS AND SAFETY:
There is no access to Calder Brick Works quarry. Access to view
the LGS is from
Elland Lower Edge (SE 128 216) along the diverted footpath
through Strangstry Wood.
There is a large fence to stop access from the footpath into
the quarry.
