SITE DESCRIPTION:
Paul and Pudsey Cloughs are two of many cloughs which drain down into the Cliviger valley. They are steep-sided and narrow, with many rock exposures in the stream and on the valley sides. Cliviger valley was overdeepened by glacial meltwater at the end of the Devensian glacial period, which has caused the tributary streams to cut deeply into the surrounding Upper Carboniferous Millstone Grits and Coal Measures, giving excellent exposures of sandstones and shales.

HISTORICAL ASSOCIATIONS:

EDUCATIONAL VALUE:
The walk to Paul and Pudsey Cloughs is rewarded by extensive exposures of Upper Carboniferous Westphalian (Coal Measures) and Namurian (Millstone Grit) strata. The presence of marine bands containing well preserved fossils is an additional interest.

Suitable for small groups of secondary and higher level students, although the quarry in Pudsey Clough is accessible for larger groups.

AESTHETIC CHARACTERISTICS:
There are dramatic views along the Cliviger Gorge.

ACCESS AND SAFETY:
Paul Clough is accessible by public footpath as far as Stiperden House Farm. It is advisable to park in Cornholme and walk up Pudsey Clough to reach the cloughs.
