SITE DESCRIPTION:
Kinderscoutian strata are exposed along a 2km westward facing escarpment over looking the Calder valley. Below Stoodley Pike a faulted section of rock reveals a sequence of sandstone and shales lying between the upper and lower Kinderscout Grits. At Langfield Edge a 100m long quarry face reveals massive beds of Kinderscout Grit. The site displays interesting geological features including plant fossils, sedimentary structures and sections of weathered rock.

HISTORICAL ASSOCIATIONS:
There is a stone loading bay near to the track at the N end of Langfield Edge.

EDUCATIONAL VALUE:
Both sites require long walks over moorland before the interesting features are reached, so school groups would not find these LGS useful. However, both sites would combine to make an excellent geological guided walk, exemplifying landscape features and geology, as well as a visit to an interesting quarry face at Langfield Edge.

AESTHETIC CHARACTERISTICS:
Both localities provide outstanding views over the Calder Valley and South Pennines. Both sites lie within an area of outstanding Pennine landscape with recreational and wildlife importance.

ACCESS AND SAFETY:
Langfield Edge - footpath from Todmorden or Mankinholes
Stoodley Pike - footpath from Mankinholes or along the Pennine Way
