SITE DESCRIPTION:
Exposures of Upper Carboniferous East Carlton Grit (Scotland Flags)
are revealed in
abandoned delph holes located on moorland overlooking the Calder Valley.
The rock
varies from well bedded sandstone to fissile siltstone. Only a few
horizons display flaggy
bedding with micaceous partings. The site contains much discarded material
where ripple
marks, trace fossils and examples of Lepidodendron bark can be seen.
HISTORICAL ASSOCIATIONS:
Of further interest is a prehistoric earth circle located adjacent
to the site.
EDUCATIONAL VALUE:
Not suitable for large parties because of rough terrain and disturbance
to wildlife habitat.
AESTHETIC CHARACTERISTICS:
Excellent views across the Calder Valley toward Cragg Vale and
Stoodley Pike.
In common with other moorland sites above the Calder valley,
Foster Clough Delves is
favoured by wildlife including birds of prey, foxes, woodpeckers
and hares.
ACCESS AND SAFETY:
Access is via the Calderdale Way from Midgley or via a track
from Foster Clough
Bridge.
