SITE DESCRIPTION:
This site is a disused quarry and a wind eroded crag on Bingley Moor. There are massive beds of the Upper Carboniferous Namurian Rough Rock sandstones in the quarry, which show large scale cross bedding. The rock stack shows cross bedding which has been etched out by wind erosion.

HISTORICAL ASSOCIATIONS:

Eldwick QuarryEDUCATIONAL VALUE:
This is a good site for demonstrating styles of cross bedding, measuring current directions and for interpreting a depositional environment.

AESTHETIC CHARACTERISTICS:
Excellent views are obtained from the Crag across the middle Aire Valley which can be linked to the underlying geology and geomorphological processes.

ACCESS AND SAFETY:
The site is perfectly safe given normal precautions that should be taken when in the vicinity of vertical faces. There does not appear to be any loose rock on the faces but there is plenty of spoil to examine at the entrance to the quarry. Limited parking is possible on the roadside but would be better in the adjacent public house (Dick Hudson's - the Fleece) car park. Access to the site from the road is by public footpath.
